They live in a house called “Great Meadow” on a small farm in the west of Ireland. Fellow Irish author Colm Toibin says it was worth the wait: To see the rebellion and yet the inability to leave they all take their father with them, whether they mean to or not. He cannot come to terms with his role as pawn, and so he becomes the master of his own kingdom, his little home, and refuses to let the outside world in except by way of his children who are allowed to bring little pieces of the outside world in, filtered as they are through the eyes of people he trained in how to see and what to say. One aspect of Moran that I could readily empathise with was his love of the land. All the small details of the Morans’ lives gather together to give a powerful story of intergenerational relationships and the need to form connections to the past.
Being left on the periphery of what was happening he had become bored and driven to town with his son.
Amongst Women is an excellent novel. And my wife’s father, and my friend’s father. We also see the faithful practice of the rosary.

The closest I ever got to any man was when I had him in the sights of my rifle and I never missed. The rest of the story gives an extended account in flashback about wonen life of the Moran family in Great Meadow. Mona gets a good job in the civil service and remains single.

Loved the setting of rural Ireland and the times depicted, found the delivery to be lyrical in parts. Irish Catholic patriarchs are a breed apart, but a specific breed nonetheless mcgxhern my childhood best friend’s father was the living manifestation of Moran, at sea in a household of mostly women, who turned to him for direction and a sense of purpose, needing him to feel necessary and connected while at the same time resenting it.
I think I literally had 2 or 3 5 minute plus conversations with him about anything, and I tried, as did my mother and siblings, in the thirty years I knew him.
Love in Moran’s family is filled with bullying and the need to ritualize. Moran’s controlling nature is shown from the very first flashback narrative. His wife, Rose, and mcgajern three daughters who love and fear their father, now care for him as his health fails and the shadows draw on.

The Lilliput Press, Dublin. Amongstt is a short but amazingly rich and complex novel. McGahern goes even further and shows that patriarchy as a refuge of the socially ill-adjusted and emotionally immature man and asks probing questions about the cult of family. Colm Toibin said of Amongst Women ” It is the sort of book which you can give anyone of any age and know that they will be changed by it.
His son Michael’s attempts to escape the restrictions of the family. Indeed, Moran would be the last one to admit it, but she does him the favor of womeb life by not only making the first move but consistently and selflessly somen herself to the attention, friendship, and responsibility of Moran’s only castle- Great Meadow, his proud and distinctly distant home, and his family where he is equally loathed and respected. Moran’s personality becomes apparent in his dealings with his family, who all love and respect wome despite his violent outbursts and his lack of apologies.
It is a book that will stay with me for a long time. A devastating portrait of a family and eminently readable.

After Christmas, Mona, the one girl who had not married, came every weekend from Dublin. She is quietly tolerant of Moran’s mood swings, even when he verbally abuses her. The novel jkhn set in County Leitrim  in the rural midlands of Republic of Ireland.
The characterisation and sense of time and place are spot on.
