I felt too that the prose was enjoyable, and beautifully clear – there was a huge amount of information packed into every paragraph, but I never had to read anything twice. But the notion that Talleyrand was Napoleon’s ‘master’ is a preposterous one. The name of Napoleon Bonaparte to me is synonymous with Corsica. This very charitable memoir requires the reader to have a good understanding of the history of revolutionary and post-revolutionary France. Napoleon was no longer waging war for any greater reason than that he enjoyed it.
